Ventura firefighters subdued a two-alarm house fire Wednesday night after twice searching the burning structure for a 15-month-old infant.
The blaze, reported at 7:16 p.m., gutted the house in the 600 block of Sheridan Way but caused no injuries or damage to nearby homes, Ventura Fire Department Battalion Chief Bill Rigg said.
Neighbors on the street near Ventura Avenue first noticed the flames and tried to put the fire out by breaking windows and opening doors, Rigg said. However, their efforts caused the fire to spread more quickly so that the one-story house was fully involved when firefighters arrived, he said.
With four engines on the scene, firefighters had the flames contained within 10 minutes, Rigg said. Warned that a child might be home, firefighters conducted two searches but found no one.
Later, tenant Dana Taylor and her baby returned from the grocery store to a home charred by fire.
Rigg said the Fire Department was investigating the cause of the fire and the extent of the damage.
