Schwarzkopf Undergoes Cancer Surgery

WASHINGTON — Retired Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf, who headed U.S. forces during the Persian Gulf War, underwent surgery for prostate cancer Wednesday at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
“All indications are that the cancer was discovered in its early stages, and the prospects are for a full recovery,” the hospital said in a statement.
Dr. David McLeod, chief of urology at Walter Reed, said Schwarzkopf was in excellent physical condition and should recover fully in a matter of weeks.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer affecting men, with an estimated 165,000 new cases in 1993. It occurs in the prostate gland, located at the base of the bladder.
