An 83-year-old man who died after his car was broadsided by an armored truck just outside a Ventura cemetery has been identified by the Ventura County coroner’s office as Howard Schaaf, a retired engineer from Ventura.
Schaaf was exiting Ivy Lawn Memorial Park on Valentine Road after visiting his wife’s grave when he was struck by the truck operated by Armored Transport of Ventura, a Ventura Police Department spokesman said.
Schaaf died instantly, according to Deputy Coroner Mitch Breese. The driver of the truck was traveling within the speed limit and not considered at fault, the police spokesman said.
The armored truck driver and the two guards who rode with him were uninjured in the incident, the police spokesman said. The three remained in the vehicle until another armored truck arrived to remove the money it had collected from banks and markets in Ventura.
