SANTA ANA — A 57-year-old bicyclist died Friday of head wounds after he apparently ran a red light and was hit by a minivan, police said.
Vinh Van Luu of Santa Ana was eastbound on Willits Street about 5:30 a.m. when he was struck by the minivan northbound on Fairview Street, Sgt. Dick Faust said.
“The minivan had the green light,” Faust said. “The bicyclist had just been nearly hit by another car in that same intersection when the van came along.”
Luu was thrown nearly 50 feet, from one side of the street to the other, and landed in the gutter, police said. He was not wearing a helmet. The unconscious man was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange. He died nearly seven hours later, Faust said.
No one was cited in the accident, which is still under investigation, police said.
