Oxnard Paper to Call It Quits Thursday

The 95-year-old Oxnard Press-Courier will publish its last edition Thursday, making it the third newspaper to cease publication in Ventura County in the past 1 1/2 years.
Citing the state’s troubled economy and the county’s competitive newspaper market, newspaper officials announced Monday that the Press-Courier could no longer afford to stay in business.
Toronto-based Thomson Newspapers, which owns the Press-Courier, is also publisher of the San Gabriel Valley Newspapers in Los Angeles County.
In addition to the Press-Courier, the Camarillo Daily News and the Santa Paula Chronicle have ceased publishing recently, the result of what Editor & Publisher magazine calls one of the hottest newspaper wars in the nation.
The Los Angeles Times launched its daily Ventura County Edition in 1990, after operating a weekly Ventura County section.
E. W. Scripps Co., which had purchased the Camarillo Daily News last year and began publishing a zoned edition of the Ventura-based Star-Free Press in Camarillo, also publishes three other daily newspapers in the county.
