The Santa Ana Unified School District board has named Don Champlin as interim superintendent to replace Rudy M. Castruita, who will leave the district in mid-July.
The board made its decision in closed session at its Tuesday meeting.
Champlin, who now serves as assistant superintendent of personnel services, will take over effective July 18, district spokeswoman Diane Thomas said.
He has worked for the district since 1986 and will replace Castruita, who has accepted a job as superintendent of schools for San Diego County. Castruita joined the district in 1985, Thomas said.
As interim superintendent of the county’s largest school district, Champlin will oversee 3,600 full-time and 500 part-time employees. The district serves nearly 50,000 students.
A search firm was named last week to find a qualified candidate to take the $124,000-a-year job and district officials have said they expect the search to take about four months.
