Rancho Santiago College professor Wayne Gibson has won a $30,000 grant to buy math-related computers and software to improve undergraduate science courses.
The award, from the National Science Foundation, will be used to create a computer laboratory that will free students from tough algebraic calculations so they can concentrate on the underlying concepts of experiments.
The lab will also offer multimedia presentations that explain complex calculus concepts in an easy-to-understand manner, spokesman Dale Ruhe said.
The program is intended to meet the special needs of the Rancho Santiago campus. More than 50% of its students speak English as a second language, and almost 70% of incoming freshmen place below average on standard math placement exams, Ruhe said.
