Last season Cherrington gained 327 yards in a game against Dana Hills. Friday, he again got loose in a big way, rushing for 279 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-23 victory over Bellflower. Cherrington also returned a kickoff 92 yards for a touchdown, giving the Falcons a 21-17 lead late in the third quarter. And he caught a pass for 17 yards, giving him 388 yards in total offense. “He did it all,” Santa Ana Valley Coach Scott Orloff said. “He had the big plays for us all night long.” Cherrington has gained more than 2,500 yards in his three-year career, putting him about 1,600 yards behind school record-holder Myron White, who rushed for 4,164 from 1972-74.

Cross-country

Adalberto Sanchez: Capistrano Valley, senior. Finished three miles in 15:00 to win the Newport-Irvine Rotary Club Invitational at Woodbridge High.

Football

Greg Fausto: Los Amigos, junior. Rushed for 275 yards and five touchdowns in a 38-21 victory over Tustin.

Stanley Villanueva: Century, junior. Completed nine of 10 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns in a 33-7 victory over Norwalk Glenn.

Water polo

Brian Brown: Foothill, junior. Scored four goals in a 9-8 upset of then top-ranked Corona del Mar.
