Nantucket’s Very Berry Fest

The Pilgrims looked at the pink blossom and saw the head of a crane. “Crane-berry” they called it, and after the first taste, probably added, “It needs sugar.”
The tart fruit, a key ingredient on millions of Thanksgiving tables, is the star of the annual Cranberry Harvest Weekend, Oct. 14-16, on Nantucket, the fishhook-shaped island 30 miles off the Massachusetts coast.
Visitors can take a shuttle to see the world’s largest contiguous cranberry bog, where the submerged vines are beaten by the wooden paddles of a water reel and harvesters in hip boots sweep the berries together. They can also take in a food festival, harvest marketplace and the annual Cranberry Harvest Cookery Contest.
