Four-Star Films : ‘The Devil and Daniel Webster’
- Share via
Stephen Vincent Benet’s New England version of “Faust,” with the Devil (Walter Huston, left, as the wickedly gleeful Mr. Scratch) battling oratorical genius Daniel Webster (Edward Arnold, right) for the soul of farmer James Craig. Benet wrote the script, and director William Dieterle and cinematographer Joe August had a field day, bringing back all the shadowy delights of German Expressionism. With a score by Bernard Herrmann (Showtime Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.).
