COLLEGE FOOTBALL DAILY REPORT : USC : Workouts Will Be Less Physical

Coach John Robinson said he is so alarmed at the increasing number of injuries in college football that he has altered USC’s practice schedule.

“When we lost Phalen Pounds (sidelined because of a knee injury) and John Allred (broken leg) in two days in practice, it changed me,” he said.

“We’re just not going to have as many physical drills as we should.”

Rob Johnson, three days after being unable to start at quarterback for the first time in two seasons, took most of the snaps in practice Tuesday and showed no signs of favoring the right ankle that was sprained in the Oregon game. Johnson said the ankle felt better.

Stanford Coach Bill Walsh, on his team’s 36-35 loss at Arizona State last Saturday, on a field goal with six seconds to go:

“As a coach, you try to make college football a lasting experience for these players, and I think we did that . . . none of them will ever forget that game.”

On a conference call to reporters Tuesday, Walsh--whose team will play USC on Saturday in Palo Alto--said of his 1-3-1 team: “Statistically, we look good. We’re completing a lot of passes. All those things are there, and we’re not winning. We had a 41-41 game and a 36-35 game and didn’t win either one. It’s tough. We expected a solid year and it’s not happening.” *
