THE WEST OF WILD BILL HICKOK ...

THE WEST OF WILD BILL HICKOK by Joseph G. Rosa (University of Oklahoma Press: $15.95; 223 pp.). James Butler Hickok (1837-76) was a man of genuine accomplishments, serving as a Union agent during the Civil War and a frontier lawman. He was also one of the nation’s first media stars, whose real and fictionalized adventures were chronicled in the popular press. In an expanded version of his 1974 study, “They Called Him Wild Bill,” Joseph Rosa examines Hickok’s life and legend. He supplements the account with an array of vintage photographs and drawings of Hickok, his family and other people involved in his life.
