Lakers Start Slowly, Lose to Seattle

SAN DIEGO — Shawn Kemp had 31 points and eight rebounds in 25 minutes and the Seattle SuperSonics shot 59.2% Wednesday night to send the Lakers to their first loss of the exhibition season, a 131-113 decision before 13,843 at the San Diego Sports Arena.
Nick Van Exel made 12 of 18 attempts, including four of seven three-pointers, en route to a game-high 33 points for the Lakers.
“I thought at the outset our players were timid,” Coach Del Harris said after the Lakers committed 20 turnovers against the SuperSonics’ trapping, pressing defense.
After starting with three consecutive exhibition victories for the first time since 1989--beating the lottery-bound Clippers and Sacramento in all three--the Lakers dropped to 3-1. Their next game is Friday night against the Orlando Magic as part of the four-team GTE Everything Pages Shootout at the Forum.
