Man on Tracks Killed by Train

A man apparently bent on committing suicide knelt between railroad tracks Thursday, beat his chest and gestured challenges until an oncoming freight train killed him, Los Angeles police reported.

Day laborers nearby saw a man in his 30s kneel on the tracks near the overpass on Sherman Way and Hines Street and dive under the engine just before it hit him, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Paul Modrell said.

Modrell said the man had not been identified.

It was the 42nd death this year involving pedestrians trespassing on Southern Pacific tracks and being hit by trains, railroad spokesman Jack Martin said.

“This is the sort of thing that you have no defense against,” he said. “It was an unfortunate death.”
