Crespi Edges St. Paul in Final Seconds

SPECIAL TO THE TIMES

Dave Lins’ nine-yard touchdown pass to Marcos Solorzano with 12 seconds remaining Friday night lifted Crespi High to a dramatic 14-13 upset over previously undefeated St. Paul in a Del Rey League game.

“We’d run that play three or four times earlier in the game, but always to the flop side,” Crespi Coach Tim Lins said of the decisive play. “This time Dave went to the other side where there was man-to-man coverage.”

The key play of the 14-play, 49-yard drive came on fourth and one at the St. Paul 22-yard line when Lins caught his batted pass and ran around right end for a first down. “It was supposed to be a hitch and go,” said Lins, who completed 21 of 24 attempts for 164 yards. “We got lucky. The ball came right back to me and I just ran.”
