WESTMINSTER — Running back Leonard Ibarra scored on a five-yard run with 1 minute 56 seconds left to give Westminster a 27-20 victory over Saddleback in a Golden West League game Friday at Westminster.
The winning drive was highlighted by a 45-yard completion from Jerry Allison to Ibarra that moved the ball to the Saddleback 17-yard line.
Saddleback (2-5, 1-1 in league) had tied the score two minutes earlier on Danny Verino’s two-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run. Westminster was offside on Saddleback’s first conversion try putting the ball on the two-yard line.
The drive began when Hector Hernandez returned a kickoff 66 yards to the Westminster 12. The drive took three plays and was aided by a facemask penalty that gave Saddleback first and goal at the four.
Saddleback had made it 17-12 by driving 55 yards to open the fourth quarter. Brian Killingbeck scored on a 15-yard run.
Westminster (5-2, 2-0) scored 17 points in the second quarter and led 17-0 at the half. Ibarra caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Allison early in the second quarter. Five plays earlier, Ibarra had an apparent 69-yard touchdown run called back because of a holding penalty. Allison also connected with Jimmy Adkisson on a 28-yarder in the drive.
Allison ran 56 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the Lions’ next possession and Westminster led 13-0.
Allison completed 11 of 20 passes for 209 yards.
