Alternative League Set to Unveil Plans

Organizers of the United Baseball League, drafted as an alternative to the American and National leagues, have scheduled a news conference in New York for Tuesday to unveil their plans.

Player agent Dick Moss, the principal organizer, declined comment on Friday, but sources close to the operation said it now appears likely that a realistic starting date is 1996, not ‘95, when the American and National leagues might still be shut down by the players’ strike.

“We’ll try for ‘95, but it’s going to be difficult,” a source said in reference to organizing complications. “The original plan called for ’96 all along.”

The American and National leagues have not been challenged by an alternative league since the Federal League opened in 1914 and shut down a year later.
