Expos Name Benedict to Minor League Pitching Post

Former Chatsworth High and Valley College baseball player Jim Benedict has been named minor league pitching coordinator for the Montreal Expos.
Benedict, 33, succeeds Herm Starrette, who is now the pitching coach for the Boston Red Sox.
Benedict, who for the last four years worked as a scout for the Texas Rangers, pitched three seasons in the Kansas City Royal and Atlanta Brave organizations, advancing to the double-A level.
The budget-conscious Expos traditionally have relied on younger players brought up through their own system.
“That’s the intriguing part of this job,” Benedict said. “We have good young pitching and we build from within.”
Benedict has also coached at Valley College, Loyola Marymount and Chapman.
