PREP ROUNDUP : No. 6 Irvine Wins Coast Wrestling Classic

Justin Meier and Steve Ruiz finished first as sixth-ranked Irvine won the Coast Wrestling Classic at Santa Cruz High School. The tournament, which had 37 participants, is considered a warm-up for the Fountain Valley Five Counties tournament, which is held in January.
Irvine finished with 168 points, only five ahead of second-place Shingle Springs Pondersoa and third-place Madera (154 1/2).
Meier, who wrestled at 130 pounds, pinned second-seeded Ruben Guttierez of San Jose Overfelt in one minute 21 seconds to win the championship.
Ruiz won at 189 pounds by defeating Orinda Miramonte’s Justin Soucy, 4-0, in the finals.
Andrew Pena finished second at 119 pounds, losing to George Moreno in the finals, 20-11. To reach the finals, however, Pena pinned top-seeded Max Taylor in the semifinals in 3:10.
Cris Testerman went 6-1, with three pins to finish third, defeating Oakdale’s David Sturtevant by injury default.
Peter Hamilton, who as 4-2 at 112 pounds, finished fifth by defeating Cesar Arias of Firebaugh, 12-2.
At 125 pounds, Jeremy Brown also finished fifth, pinning Santa Cruz Harbor’s Tyler Dominguez in four minutes 16 seconds.
In the Hacienda Heights Wilson boys’ soccer tournament:
Westminster 0, La Puente 0, (Westminster wins on penalty kicks 4-3)--Leo Gimenez had the winning penalty kick for Westminster (4-2-2). The Lions will play Bellflower St. John Bosco today in the quarterfinals. In an earlier game, David Kurien had two goals for Westminster in a 5-0 victory over Monrovia.
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Tustin 2, Foothill 1--Doug Gonzalez scored the winning goal for Tustin (3-2-2). Jerry Gandorillas also scored for the Tillers off an assist from Gonzalez. Chris McCauley scored for Foothill.
In a consolation game of the South Torrance girls’ soccer tournament:
Mission Viejo 2, La Canada 1--Jill Erickson and Michelle De Liema scored for Mission Viejo (6-3-1).
In the Los Gatos girls’ soccer tournament:
Mater Dei 3, Cupertino Homestead 0--Kim Buccola, Michelle Perez and Katie Ticehurst each scored for Mater Dei (3-3-2), which will play Danville San Ramon Monday. In an earlier game, Mater Dei lost, 4-0, to San Jose Presentation.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Santa Margarita 2, Encinitas San Dieguito 1--Kristen Rowe and Suzie Mora each scored to lead visiting Santa Margarita (2-1-1). Amy Nesbitt had four saves for the Eagles.
