GIRLS’ BASKETBALL / BOLSA GRANDE CHRISTMAS CLASSIC : Late Free Throws Seal Victory for Trabuco Hills

GARDEN GROVE — Sarah Warnick broke a 59-59 tie with two free throws in the late going to help lead Trabuco Hills to a 67-64 victory over Montebello Cantwell Sacred Heart on Saturday night in the championship game of the Bolsa Grande Christmas Classic.
Warnick followed with two more free throws and a field goal before fouling out with 1 minute 12 seconds left, when the Mustangs had a three-point edge. It was Trabuco Hills’ first girls’ basketball tournament title.
LaShieka Henderson, tournament most valuable player, had 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Trabuco Hills (8-2) overcame a 16-9 first-quarter deficit to take a 33-26 lead at halftime. Leading the way was Henderson, who scored 13 points in the second quarter.
Cantwell Sacred Heart (8-2) outscored the Mustangs, 11-2, to open the fourth quarter and built a 57-51 lead before Trabuco Hills recovered and outscored the Cardinals, 16-7, for the victory.
Dyanna Hatch contributed three three-pointers and 18 points for Trabuco Hills.
“We have the potential to be a good team, but we still haven’t jelled,” said Trabuco Hills Coach Howard Stephens, noting the team had to overcome 37 turnovers in the contest.

In the third-place game:
Westminster 43, Capistrano Valley 39--Amber Farroux converted on a three-point play with 27 seconds left, breaking a 39-39 tie, to lead the Lions. She had 19 points.
In a consolation game:
San Clemente 61, Magnolia 47--Heather Hollis scored 24 points and had 20 rebounds as San Clemente (5-5) won the fifth-place game.
Stacy Tewell had 15 points for Magnolia (3-5).
