Firm May Apply for Landfill Permits

The backers of a proposed landfill at Weldon Canyon near Ojai said Friday that they may apply for development permits from the county within the next few weeks.
Richard Marcus, a general partner of Taconic Resources, which wants to build the dump, said the company paid a $3,850 county permit-processing fee Thursday. Marcus said the fee is simply to cover county expenses for gathering all of the environmental documents on the proposed landfill.
He said Taconic will probably make a decision within the next month on whether it will actually apply for the needed permits.
With Bailard Landfill in Oxnard scheduled to close in 1997, Weldon Canyon near Ojai has long been proposed as a site for a new west county landfill.
But Ojai residents have for years successfully fought against a dump at the canyon between Ventura and Ojai, saying it would harm the area’s rural atmosphere.
Taconic spent more than $330,000 in a failed four-month campaign to place the Weldon issue on the November ballot. A judge found the initiative invalid.
