Conservancy Editorial Displays Xenophobia
- Share via
Your Dec. 18 editorial “Conservancy Should Keep Its Focus Local” exhibits incredible xenophobia. This xenophobia only seems to be apparent to those of us Los Angeles County residents who live along the Santa Susana Mountains or the western edge of the San Gabriel Mountains. If the editorial writers would take that time to attend a conservancy meeting they would learn that these areas are within the purview of the conservancy by law. Furthermore, the funds that are used to purchase lands in these areas, including the Santa Monica Mountains, are taxes and bonds paid for by citizens all over the state and the county. As an example, look at the biological values represented by the Santa Clarita woodlands in the Santa Susana Mountains and San Gabriel Mountains. In short, there are other important wild areas in L.A. County which require protection.
As you mention, a shortage of funds makes conservancy land purchase decisions extremely difficult. But the conservancy, led by the able Joe Edmiston, has played a crucial role in preserving our declining open space. For its part, the Los Angeles Times should get the facts straight before it blindly declares that the Santa Monica Mountains are the only areas worthy of the conservancy’s effort. The rest of Los Angeles County is watching.
