A new six-lane bridge carrying Kimball Road over California 126 in east Ventura was formally opened by city and state officials at a ceremony Tuesday.
The $10-million interchange is the largest city-financed transportation project in Ventura’s history, officials said.
Construction began in August, 1993. The project included the new bridge, which is expected to accommodate about 16,000 drivers a day.
The old bridge was two lanes wide.
The project also includes a bicycle and pedestrian underpass and walls to block road noise from nearby houses.
Landscaping on the project continues, but the interchange has been completely open for about a month, City Engineer Rick Raives said.
