A disease called fusarium wilt has stricken many palm trees in the Dana Point area, and the Tree Society of Orange County says the impact is being felt statewide.
A recent publication of the society said the onset of the tree disease in Orange County “has sent ripples of concern throughout Southern and Central California.”
The society said fusarium wilt “is like AIDS to Canary Island palms.”
The publication blamed over-pruning of the palms for aiding the spread of the disease. The society said chain saws should not be used in palm pruning because such tools cannot be properly sterilized to prevent the spread of the disease.
