‘Outland’ Cartoon Creator Breathed Puts Down His Pen

No more Opus, no more Bill the Cat, no more “Outland” as of March 26.
That’s the announcement from Berkeley Breathed, the creator of the Sunday-only cartoon that has been running since 1989.
In explanation, Breathed said: “Eventually . . . I would be drawing only for a paycheck. Paychecks are lovely things, but cartoonists die and go to cartoon hell for working beyond that magic intersection of art and fun.”
Breathed arrived on the national comics scene in 1980 with “Bloom County,” which ran until 1989. In 1987, he won a Pulitzer Prize for cartooning.
