CSUN to Mark Year After Reopening

Cal State Northridge is planning a festival to mark the one-year anniversary of its reopening after last year’s earthquake. The university, often referred to in the aftermath of the Northridge temblor as Epicenter U., will celebrate with exhibits, film screenings and a block party.
CSUN reopened following the devastating quake on Valentine’s Day, 1994, four weeks to the day after most of its buildings were closed because of the Jan. 17 jolt.
The university is holding the weeklong celebration, beginning Feb. 13. The event is open to the entire community in order to “showcase the triumph of human intellect, imagination, and spirit over adversity,” said university President Blenda J. Wilson.
Only about one-third of the campus facilities damaged in the quake have been restored. University officials hope to have most of CSUN’s students back in permanent classrooms by the 1995-96 academic year.
Enrollment at the university has suffered since the quake. Officials tout this festival as an opportunity to persuade former and potential students that the campus is operating at full capacity academically.
Information about the festival is available by calling (818) 700-6000.
