Loyola Can’t Stop Portland, 71-61

Canaan Chatman scored 21 points to help Portland to a 71-61 victory over Loyola Marymount on Saturday night at Portland.
Portland, 15-4 overall and 6-2 in the West Coast Conference, never trailed after opening a 35-29 halftime lead.
Loyola (10-10, 2-6) pulled to within 56-55 with 5:54 to play before Portland started a 5-0 run.
“We gave an excellent effort against a good basketball team,” Lion Coach John Olive said. “Like a good team, Portland made the big plays down the stretch.”
Senior guard Robin Kirksey had 23 points, six rebounds and three assists for Loyola, which has lost six of its last seven games.
