Gaviota Maintenance Services Inc., a Ventura oil-field services firm, has been awarded a $6-million contract to provide maintenance and repairs at the Elk Hills Naval Petroleum Reserve in Kern County.
The contract was issued by Bechtel Petroleum Operators Inc., which manages Elk Hills production for the Energy Department.
The reserve is 20% owned by Chevron USA, with the rest in a public trust. It originally provided oil and gas exclusively for the U. S. military but was opened to commercial production in 1976.
Gaviota has 65 employees at the site 26 miles southwest of Bakersfield. They are working under a two-year contract that includes an option for an additional two years, the company said.
