From Times Staff and Wire Reports
The U.N. Security Council unanimously approved sending 7,000 peacekeepers to Angola to cement an accord ending 19 years of civil war. At the urging of the United States, the peacekeepers will be sent in stages to avoid entangling the soldiers in any new large-scale fighting. It was unclear when the force will begin to arrive in the southern African nation, where about 300 U.N. military observers and other peacekeepers currently are stationed. More than 500,000 Angolans have died in the war.
