VALLEY Parenting : Helping a Child Feel at Home at New School
- Share via
To help children adjust to a new school, educational experts suggest the following:
* If possible, put off the move until September. A student who is present on the first day of school--before classroom routines and friendships are cemented--won’t feel quite as out of it as the child who joins a classroom in the middle of a term.
* Help your child become acquainted with the campus ahead of time. Visit school when it’s not in session--and when it is. Attend campus events and open houses. Locate classrooms, restrooms, the cafeteria and other facilities.
* Meet with the principal, teachers and counselors. Ask if the school has a welcoming committee or buddy system for new students. Many do.
* Get to know a few parents who can introduce your child to kids who attend the school. Your child will feel more comfortable if there are a few familiar faces on that first day.
* Encourage your youngster to say hello to other students, ask questions and join groups.
* Don’t expect instant miracles. Adjusting to situations takes time. (Remember your first day at a new job?) Let your child know it is perfectly normal to feel scared--and that it will get better soon.
