FOUR-STAR FILM : ‘The Secret Garden’
Director Agnieszka Holland and adapter Caroline Thompson have created a lush and faithful 1993 film of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved children’s classic. Imperious 10-year-old Mary Lennox (Kate Maberly, pictured), orphaned in India, is sent to live at her uncle’s forbidding Yorkshire estate. Although spoiled rotten, Mary has a doughty spirit, which allows her and her grief-engulfed relatives to affect each other in a magical, transforming fashion. With Heydon Prowse as the sickly Colin, Andrew Knott (left) as the sturdy Dickon and Maggie Smith as the killjoy housekeeper Mrs. Medlock. (Cinemax Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.)
