SANTA ANA — A stray bullet “from out of nowhere” struck an 8-year-old boy in the neck while he was playing with his older brother Friday night in the front yard of their home, police said.
Jeraldo Bueno of Santa Ana was taken to UCI Medical Center, where he was in guarded condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Police Sgt. Dick Faust said Bueno had been outside playing with his 13-year-old brother in the 200 block of South Sullivan Street about 8 p.m. when a bullet punctured his neck muscles, knocking the boy to the ground.
Paramedics said the wound could have been much worse had the bullet struck him a fraction of an inch closer to his trachea.
