World IN BRIEF : ALGERIA : 300 Islamic Rebels Reportedly Killed

Security forces have killed more than 300 Islamic extremists over the last five days in fighting west of Algiers, a newspaper reported. The operation is one of the largest of its kind in Algeria since the start of an insurgency by Islamic extremists three years ago. The newspaper El Watan said army troops were battling more than 400 guerrillas in the Ain Defla region, 90 miles west of Algiers, the capital of this North African nation. Army losses were not given.
