MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina — Boxer Antonio Tarver of Orlando, Fla., wrapped up a record-breaking performance for U.S. athletes at the Pan American Games Sunday by defeating Thompson Garcia of Ecuador in the light-heavyweight final.
Tarver’s gold medal was the 169th for the United States, which breaks the Pan Am record of 168 the U.S. team set at Indianapolis in 1987.
The gold medal mark was tied when Karen Smyers of Lincoln, Mass., won the women’s triathlon Sunday morning.
Jake Flores of Temecula got a bronze medal in judo.
