In another nonleague game:
Foothill 7, Fountain Valley 2--Foothill Coach Joe Gonzales used his team’s speed to its advantage in the victory over visiting Fountain Valley.
The top-ranked Knights (9-0) converted on two squeeze plays in a six-run fifth inning.
“Our speed was what really helped us,” Gonzales said. “They just couldn’t handle our squeeze plays.”
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth, Foothill’s Jennifer Beltran singled and scored on a throwing error by Barons pitcher Keary Camunas (4-4). After Marisa Holmes drove in Dawn Davidson, Robin Tessman squeezed in Michelle Churnock and Marie Gieron squeezed in Holmes. Amie Barnes capped the inning with a two-run double.
Gieron (7-0) gave up a run on a wild pitch in the third inning, was relieved by Lindsay Fossatti in the fourth, then re-entered the game in the fifth. Fountain Valley scored its other run off Fossatti when catcher Alicia Burdick scored on a fielder’s choice.
Churnock, who entered the game fourth in the county with a .536 batting average, had three hits, scored two runs and stole two bases for the Knights.
