HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP : Newbury Park Has Track Field Day

Dawn Anderson and Joy Munson each won two events to lead the Newbury Park High girls’ team to victory in the Channel Islands Invitational track and field meet Saturday.

Newbury Park had 140 points to 68 for runner-up Channel Islands.

The Panthers, led by shotput winner Brock Diediker, also won the boys’ meet, edging Ventura, 85-81.

Anderson, runner-up in the shotput and discus in last year’s Marmonte League championships, heaved the shot 40 feet 3 3/4 inches, the best of her career, and threw the discus 117-10.

Munson timed 61.81 seconds in the 400 meters and bounded 33-4 in the triple jump as Newbury Park went one-two in those events.

Diediker, who put the shot a personal best of 50-6, was the lone victor for Newbury Park in the boys’ meet, but the Panthers’ depth proved decisive.

In other events, Ronney Jenkins of Hueneme won the long jump with a career-best and region-leading mark of 23-5 3/4, Ramsey Jay of Ventura won the 400 in 49.38 and Hasita Sutton of Ventura won the discus with a career-best of 154-2.

BASEBALL

Quartz Hill 10, Hesperia 9--J.D. Smith, Darrell Hussman and Paul Leth hit home runs during an eight-run fifth inning as the Rebels held off the Scorpions in a nonleague game at Quartz Hill.

Mark Madsen (3-0) gave up 10 hits but pitched a complete game for the Rebels (8-0).

JoSean Lyles added a home run in the first inning for Quartz Hill.

Thousand Oaks 5-6, Highland 1-2--Ryan Lane pitched a one-hitter, struck out 10 and walked three for the Lancers (8-4) in the first game of the nonleague sweep at Thousand Oaks.

Jack Wilson had four hits, including two doubles, drove in one run and scored four times for Thousand Oaks in the two games.

St. Bonaventure 7, Ventura 4--JoJo Molina had two hits and an RBI and shortstop Andrew Montenegro had six assists as the Seraphs (4-4) won a nonleague game at St. Bonaventure.

Faith Baptist 21, Santa Maria Valley Christian 0--Judd Granzow (4-1) pitched a one-hitter for the Contenders in a nonleague game at Faith Baptist.

Jay Carpenter had three hits and six RBIs for Faith Baptist (7-3).

L.A. Baptist 15-10, Lone Pine 3-6--Seth Barkley had three hits and four RBIs, and John Wilson hit his third home run in the first game for the Knights at Lone Pine.

Bryan Gant (2-0) struck out 13 in the opener for L.A. Baptist (10-1).

Jon Wada of L.A. Baptist had two hits and two RBIs in the second game.

SOFTBALL

La Reina 3-3, Hart 1-2--Katie Russell, who had two hits, scored the tying run and Amy Thompson scored the winning run on a delayed steal in the second game of the Regents’ nonleague sweep.

Shane Anderson added three hits and three RBIs for the Regents (7-5), who handed the visiting Indians their first losses of the season.

Tracy Clark of Hart (10-2) had two singles and an RBI for the day.

Canyon 7-1, Hoover 0-3--Nadine Ivanovsky, Sunshine Esparza and Lindsey Greblo each had two hits and Lisa Villasenor (3-1) pitched six shutout innings for the Cowboys (6-4) in the opener of the nonleague doubleheader at Canyon.

Tina Kinney (7-3) pitched a three-hitter and hit a home run for the Tornadoes (7-5) in the second game.
