A creek, canyon and mesa in South County got their names because a Spanish soldier lost part of his armament in the area more than 200 years ago.
Soldiers and priests from the Portola expedition marched through what is now Orange County in 1769. On July 24 of that year, the expedition roamed to a mesa that the group named “San Francisco Solano.” However, the soldiers called the mesa “trabuco” because one of them lost his blunderbuss, or trabuco, in the area. That name stuck.
Today, the Trabuco area of South County commemorates that lost weapon.
