UCLA forward Charles O’Bannon on freshman Toby Bailey’s 26-point, nine-rebound performance: “Toby played above the rim, around the rim and through the rim. He stepped it up to another level.”
Add O’Bannon: He was asked to describe the feelings of winning the national championship. “I can’t put it into words, but if you could see my heart, there’d be a big smile on it.”
Admittedly, Bruin center George Zidek hadn’t seen many college basketball games before arriving at UCLA from Czechoslovakia.
But he thought his team’s victory over Arkansas without guard Tyus Edney was “the guttiest win I’d ever seen a college team do. We were in a six-man rotation, but we could have played another half.”
