NHL ROUNDUP : Lindros Gives Flyers a Lift, 3-1

From Associated Press

Eric Lindros’ 23rd goal broke a tie early in the third period, and the Philadelphia Flyers defeated Washington, 3-1, Saturday at Landover, Md., ending the Capitals’ four-game winning streak.

Lindros, the NHL’s leading scorer with 57 points, broke free at the left post and flicked the rebound of Mikael Renberg’s shot from the right circle past Washington goalie Jim Carey to give the Flyers a 2-1 lead.

“When you have a big horse, you want to get the whip out and you just want to crack it,” Flyer Coach Terry Murray said. “You look for those types of players to be the difference in the game. Whenever he had to come through, he did.”

Rod Brind’Amour and Kevin Haller also scored for Philadelphia, which won for the third consecutive time and broke a four-game road winless streak.

The loss prevented Washington from taking sole possession of fourth place in the Eastern Conference.

Toronto 4, Winnipeg 3--Benoit Hogue had a goal and an assist as the Maple Leafs won at Toronto.

Mike Gartner, Mats Sundin and Mike Ridley also scored for the Maple Leafs.

Winnipeg’s goals were scored by Ed Olczyk, who was acquired from the New York Rangers Friday, Teppo Numminen and Kris King.

Tie Domi skated against the team that traded him to Toronto Friday. Domi, acquired for his toughness, hardly laid a glove on any of his former teammates.

New York Islanders 2, Florida 2--Jason Woolley’s shot from the left circle with 12.9 seconds to play in regulation ruined a stellar performance by goaltender Tommy Soderstrom and allowed the Panthers to get the tie at Uniondale, N.Y.

Bill Lindsay had the other Florida goal, as Soderstrom turned back 41 shots. Ray Ferraro and Marty McInnis scored the Islander goals.

Hartford 4, Buffalo 2--Andrew Cassels and Jimmy Carson each scored twice as the Whalers won at Hartford, ending the Sabres’ five-game unbeaten streak.

Sean Burke had a shutout until Scott Pearson scored with 2:06 remaining. Alexander Mogilny scored with 22 seconds left.

Boston 5, Tampa Bay 1--Jozef Stumpel and Steve Heinze each scored twice as the Bruins won at Boston.

Quebec 2, Ottawa 2--Bill Huard scored at 12:30 of the third period to give the Nordiques a tie with the Senators at Ottawa.

Alexei Yashin’s team-leading 18th goal had put the Senators ahead, 2-1, at 7:49 of the third period, but Huard--a former Senator traded to Quebec barely 24 hours earlier--scored from the slot to send the game into overtime.

Vancouver 4, Calgary 2--Jassen Cullimore and Pavel Bure scored 22 seconds apart in the third period to break a tie and lift the Canucks to victory at Calgary.

NHL Notes

The Dallas Stars recalled goalie Darcy Wakaluk from their Kalamazoo affiliate of the International Hockey League. Wakaluk, who broke his hand on March 16, had been sent to Kalamazoo for reconditioning. To make room for Wakaluk, Dallas sent goalie Mike Torchia back to Kalamazoo.
