Doomed Triathlon May Get Reprieve

COSTA MESA — The Orange County Performing Arts Center Triathlon might continue after all.
Greg Patterson, a spokesman for the center, said Wednesday that two sports event management companies have expressed interest in running the event following an announcement Monday that the Guilds of The Center would no longer be the organizing group.
Dwindling revenues and the high number of volunteers needed were cited as reasons the event at Lake Mission Viejo was dropped.
The Guilds helped stage the triathlon, which has come to be considered one of the best in the world, since 1991.
“The center is currently involved in negotiations with the companies involved,” Patterson said. He declined to name them.
“It’s still premature at this point, but we expect to have a better idea about the possibilities next week,” he said.
