Paramount Swap Meet is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week with giveaways and a weekend carnival.
Every 40th shopper through Sunday will receive a prize and be entered in a drawing for a $1,000 shopping spree at the daily swap meet.
The carnival will run from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday through Sunday. Admission is free before 5 p.m. and $1 per person after.
The swap meet has been held at the site of the old Paramount Drive-In Theater, on Paramount Boulevard near Rosecrans Avenue, since 1955. It was initially open on weekends and attracted 50 vendors who sold secondhand goods.
The open-air marketplace was expanded to seven days a week in 1975. Now, 4,000 merchants offer new and used merchandise, attracting 75,000 shoppers a week. It’s the largest daily swap meet in the state.
