NORTH HOLLYWOOD — They wore flowered shirts during warm-ups and the theme from Hawaii Five-0 blared from loudspeakers at Campbell Hall High.
Aside from Jack Lord, there was, however, one ingredient missing from the Vikings’ self-proclaimed Luau Night: A victory.
In a heated Alpha League match, Village Christian defeated Campbell Hall, 15-2, 15-8, 10-15, 15-7, on Thursday night.
Steadier in serving, better in ball control and able to stand up to the raucous crowd, the Crusaders (13-0, 7-0) won more than just a match.
The No. 2-ranked team in Southern Section Division III, Village Christian basically locked up the Alpha League championship.
“This is a very sweet win,” said Coach Steve Levoe, whose Crusaders swept two matches with Campbell Hall this season and can clinch a tie for the league title with a victory tonight against Valencia. “I knew it would be tough, though.”
The first two games weren’t too challenging for Village Christian, which took advantage of several Campbell Hall service-return errors and moved to a 2-0 lead.
In the third game, the Vikings (10-3, 5-2) showed why they are the fourth-ranked team in Division III, as Eric Hassan, who will play for USC next year, came alive with 15 of his 23 kills.
“That was Campbell Hall volleyball,” Viking Coach Tim Jensen said. “The (Crusaders) were worried.”
Worried? Possibly. But defeated? No.
The Crusaders simply regained their composure, their ball-control offense and then, the match.
They quickly extended a 7-6 lead into victory.
“Nothing better than this,” said outside hitter Kiko Banos, who had 11 kills despite a strained back. “Especially at their gym.”
Chad Hanson pitched in with 12 kills for the Crusaders.
“I’ve never been more relieved,” Hanson said. “This game has been in the back of my mind for a long time. This was absolutely essential for us going into the playoffs and we’ve got a good shot at the (Division III) final.”
Dylan Herrick had 10 kills and six blocks for Campbell Hall.
