Croatian Goran Ivanisevic, who lost to Andrei Medvedev last weekend in the final of the German Open, got a little revenge in the third round of the Italian Open with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) victory over Medvedev in Rome.
In other matches, Michael Chang beat Karol Kucera of Slovakia, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, and Jeff Tarango upended fellow American MaliVai Washington, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Also reaching the quarterfinals were Wayne Ferreira, Thomas Muster, Sergi Bruguera, Stefan Edberg and Jonas Bjorkman.
Mary Pierce earned two victories in the German Open to keep pace with top-seeded Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who breezed past Tatiana Ignatieva of Belarus, 6-2, 6-1, in Berlin.
Pierce, the second-seed, stopped Slovakia’s Karina Habsudova, 6-2, 6-4, in a match postponed Wednesday by rain, then battled more bad weather in ousting Argentina’s Florencia Labat, 7-5, 6-3.
American Mary Joe Fernandez wasn’t as lucky, losing to Romanian Irina Spirlea, 6-2, 6-1, and joined another upset victim, Gabriela Sabatini, who was ousted by Australian Nicole Bradtke, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
UCLA’s Robert Janecek advanced to the third round of the NCAA singles tournament with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over fifth-seeded Paul Robinson of TCU in Athens, Ga. Arizona State’s top-ranked Sargis Sargsian beat Mississippi’s Johan Hede, 7-5, 6-2.
