Where’s the Beef? In the Mailbox: More and more American shoppers are buying food by mail order, not just to get unusual items but to supplement the weekly trip to the supermarket.
More than 7.6 million Americans bought food by mail in 1993, according to Simmons Market Research Bureau, ordering from more than 1,000 catalogues. And the numbers keep on growing.
The purchases aren’t just gift items, such as fruitcakes, but staples such as meat, fish, cheese and flour. For some consumers who aren’t able to get to the supermarket or purchase the kind or variety of foods they want, shopping by mail may be the ticket.
