Firefighters to Get Bullet-Proof Vests

SANTA ANA — In an unmistakable sign that fighting fires has reached a new level of danger, the Santa Ana City Council on Monday approved the purchase of 130 bullet-proof vests for firefighters.
The council acted on a request by the Fire Department to purchase the vests, which cost $400 apiece. A number of Orange County fire departments began buying armored vests after the 1992 riots in Los Angeles, where a Santa Ana firefighter was shot in a leg.
