THOUSAND OAKS : Students to Use New Math Books This Fall

Students in sixth through 12th grades in Thousand Oaks will open new math textbooks in September and find more words and fewer numbers.
The Conejo Valley school board Tuesday unanimously approved the adoption of 23 new textbooks to go along with the Conejo Valley Unified School District’s new guidelines for teaching math, which were approved in April over the objections of one board member and several parents.
“There’s an additional emphasis on word problems,” Assistant Supt. Richard Simpson said.
Parents objected to the philosophy behind the new curriculum, which emphasizes the thinking involved in coming up with the answers to math problems, not just the answers.
Simpson said the new books, which replace ones that are 8 years old, are important for their condition as well as their content.
“Books, when they’ve been used by students for eight years, tend to wear out,” Simpson said.
The texts were selected by a committee of teachers. The high school books are expected to cost a total of $228,000, while books for intermediate school students will cost $106,000.
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade will have to wait a year for new math textbooks, as teachers continue to test the materials.
