Cameras, Electronic Media Banned at Susan Smith Trial

A judge Friday banned cameras and broadcasters from the courtroom for the trial of Susan Smith, the young mother accused of murdering her two toddlers.

“I have come to the inescapable conclusion that . . . there is a substantial likelihood of interference to the process and . . . a substantial risk to this case,” Judge William Howard said.

Smith, 23, is due to go to trial July 10. She is accused of killing her two preschool-age sons last year after perpetrating a hoax in which she claimed that a black man had seized her car and kidnaped the children. She later confessed that she had pushed her car into a lake with the two boys strapped into the back seat.
