Tennis Juniors Endorsed

Jason Cook of Woodland Hills and Nick Varvais of Simi Valley have received endorsements by the Southern California Tennis Assn. to play in the United States Tennis Assn. national junior championships in August.

SCTA endorsements are the equivalent of automatic berths. Cook and Varvais, who compete in the boys’ 18-and-under division, are fourth and fifth on the SCTA’s suggested seeding list.

Erin Boisclair and Krissy Hamilton of Agoura Hills, seeded first and second, have received endorsements in the girls’ 18 singles division, as well as Brandis Braverman of Encino.

Dylan Mann of Canoga Park and Monique Allegre of Camarillo are alternates in their respective boys’ 18 and girls’ 18 divisions.

Bob Holycross has been named coach of the Calabasas High girls’ team, replacing Bill Bellatty. Holycross, 65, coached girls’ tennis for 13 years at Upland High and has coached men’s college teams.

Steve Caresky said he will not return as the Calabasas boys’ coach next season.

Basketball

Tom Greer has been named boys’ varsity coach at Faith Baptist, replacing Greg Weiss, who stepped down to spend more time with his family.

Cycling

Thurlow Rogers of the Nutra-Fig racing team finished second to Andy Bishop of Saab in the Fitchburg (Mass.) Classic cycling race Saturday.

Bishop and Rogers, of Van Nuys, were two of five riders who timed 2 hours 31 minutes 37 seconds over the 78-mile distance.

Nutra-Fig teammates Chris Walker of Ventura and John Wordin of West Hills tied for sixth.
