WORLD IN BRIEF : CUBA : U.S. Flotilla Accused of ‘Piracy’

Cuba’s government, denouncing the American “pirates” who tried to stage a protest in Cuban waters, warned that it will attack any boat or aircraft that tries to force its way into its territory. Cuban exiles in Miami organized a 15-boat flotilla for a memorial service Thursday for 41 people killed last year in a collision with Cuban gunboats. But a Cuban coast guard craft broadsided the flotilla’s lead boat and blocked the path of others 11 miles off the coast. Three people were reported injured. “Any ship from abroad that forcibly invades our sovereign waters could be sunk and any aircraft downed,” the Cuban government warned in the Communist Party newspaper Granma. The flotilla had planned to travel to the site where a tugboat was allegedly rammed and sunk July 13, 1994, drowning 20 children and 21 adults.
