An 11-year-old boy dashing across Grand Avenue against a red light was hit by a pickup truck and critically injured early Thursday, authorities said.
Police officers responding to a reported pedestrian-related accident arrived about 7 a.m. to find David Rosales of Santa Ana lying near a crosswalk at Grand and McFadden avenues, Sgt. Dick Faust said.
Rosales suffered head and internal injuries and was in critical condition Thursday at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Authorities believe the boy was on his way to school when he was struck and thrown several feet, Faust said. He was in the crosswalk, according to police.
The 21-year-old driver of the truck had been traveling at 40 m.p.h. to 45 m.p.h., within the speed limit, Faust said, and was not cited.
